The Architecture Program continued its out-of-class learning activities under the project “Survey and Study of Northern Residential Architecture and Religious Buildings of Lanna Culture.” The purpose of this ongoing field study was to broaden students’ perspectives on architecture, culture, and Lanna art through visits to real sites within Chiang Mai city.

The activity began at KalmVillage, a creative village that harmoniously brings together art, handicrafts, and local cultural lifestyles. Beyond being an exhibition space for products, the architecture and design of the buildings themselves reflect contemporary architectural concepts that respectfully respond to the local context. This made the site a highly valuable learning resource in design for the students.

The group then visited the Chiang Mai City Arts & Cultural Center, also known as “Ho Klang Wiang.” This historically significant site was once the city’s spiritual center during the reign of King Mangrai and served as the original location of the Inthakhin City Pillar before it was relocated to Wat Chedi Luang. The exhibitions inside present the history of Chiang Mai and the way of life of the Lanna people, enhancing students’ in-depth understanding of the city’s roots and historical development.

The day concluded with a walking tour of important Lanna-style temples within the old city moat area, which is home to more than 38 temples. Experiencing these sites firsthand allowed students to truly appreciate the charm, craftsmanship, and cultural value of Lanna architecture—aptly summed up as “the more you see, the more you learn.”

This out-of-class learning experience not only expanded students’ professional architectural perspectives, but also enabled them to deeply appreciate the beauty and significance of Lanna cultural heritage, providing a meaningful experience that can be further developed in their future academic and professional endeavors.
