On November 5, 2025, the College of Architecture, Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University, led by Assoc. Prof. Phiphat Saksirikasemkul, Assistant Dean for Research and Academic Services, brought students to the field to conduct a practical activity entitled “Krathong Making to Preserve Thai Traditions” for students of Wat Sawatwaree Simaram School, Dusit District, Bangkok.
The activity was carried out in collaboration with the local wisdom of the Wat Sawatwaree Simaram community, with Ms. Naina Yonjohor and community members invited as guest instructors to transfer knowledge on traditional Krathong making to children and youth. As a result, the students gained skills in crafting traditional Krathongs and developed a deeper understanding of the value and significance of Thai traditions that have been passed down through generations.
The objectives of the activity were to promote the transmission of local wisdom to the younger generation, foster a sense of pride, and encourage participation in the conservation of Thai traditions. In addition, the activity helped to develop artistic skills and enhance knowledge of local wisdom among the participating students. The practical training on “Krathong Making to Preserve Thai Traditions” is part of the academic service project entitled “Enhancing Quality of Life through Community Wisdom Resources,” under the Art & Culture sub-program, which focuses on the development and promotion of local wisdom alongside cultural development in order to sustainably improve quality of life.
This
activity is also closely aligned with
the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs):
Goal 1: No
Poverty – The development
of traditional handicraft skills helps
create opportunities for youth to
further develop these skills into future
occupations or income-generating
activities within the community.
Goal 4: Quality
Education – The activity
promotes an understanding of the Loy
Krathong tradition as an important
cultural heritage, providing accessible
and inclusive learning opportunities for
youth in urban communities.
Goal 11: Sustainable
Cities and Communities –
By integrating cultural and artistic
knowledge into hands-on learning, the
activity created a platform for the
transmission of local wisdom to the
younger generation through creative
practices, linking the beauty of Thai
traditions with cultural conservation in
a contemporary social context.
The activity emphasized integrated collaboration among the public sector, government agencies, private organizations, educational institutions, and experts in order to jointly develop and sustainably improve the quality of life of the community in an effective manner.
